Their Fairytale

It was an ordinary Sunday morning. Stretching and yawning out loud, she trudged to her comp. The cabinet beeped, the modem blinked and she was back to her online home on orkut. She had gotten hooked to it since the past few months, thanks to some friends who had made her join. And now she was the one pestering her friends to create their own orkut profile. The friend list was expanding, the scraps growing, and the testimonials pouring in. She had joined a few hundred odd communities related to everything she liked under the sun. It was a temporary respite, she knew it. Life had been a mess since more than an year. First a breakup, then some rebounds which left her even more disillusioned. To top it all, there was her dissertation looming large. She was lucky to have many friends who cared, but she needed space right now. She kept in touch with them all, but still remained aloof. She was able to reconnect to long lost friends and made a couple of new contacts through the site. It made her feel good, but nothing could fill that void.

As a rule she deleted scraps from strangers. Muttering under her breath, she was in the middle of the process that day when she decided to reply to one, which she did on rare instances. She scanned his profile, he seemed a genuine and decent guy. And it was only an innocent remark about her cool mix of communities, not an offer for friendship, nor a comment on how cute her pic was, neither a spammer. She scrapped back a thanks and that was that. He happened to be online, and replied back. A small polite conversation followed, and they signed off after he added her. Later that evening, she was online again. One thing led to another and by night they were chatting on messenger. She felt like she had known him for ages, the feeling was mutual. In the week that followed, they exchanged numbers and since that day, there has not been a single day that they have not chatted or talked on the phone or at least exchanged a text message, no matter which part of the world they were in.

They knew they would meet soon, it was inevitable. They had become bosom buddies. Finally, on the fourth Sunday since that first scrap, they met. The feeling of having met before became even more pronounced. That evening was special, not only because they met, but it was
Chaand Raat as well. They motivated each other and ended up fasting on all the days that Ramadan, the first time both managed it. By and by, their friendship bloomed. Nothing about her could not interest him, she on the other hand felt no one could understand her unsaid feelings better. Gradually she became a part of his closest circle of friends, and he of hers. They never ran out of topics to talk about, be it the most mundane issues of daily life, college anecdotes, or world politics. Everytime they met, he would capture the moment with a pic of hers. By and by, she smiled more often, laughed more heartily, and was able to love herself again. Of all the gifts he gave her, that was the greatest.

The year rolled over, they grew more inseparable with passing time. Though they were not aware of it, their friends were able to see the obvious. When asked they would deny, laughing it off. But gradually they began to feel it too. And one night, he admitted guiltily that he felt something more for her of late. She owed up to it as well and they were glad to have cleared it out so that they could put it behind them. But that was not meant to be. Little did they know that they were meant to be together, since that ordinary Sunday, many months back. And the rest is history. Today, two years later, if there is something they fret about most, it is as to why they did not meet earlier in life. But then, everything has its own time and tide. As someone rightly said, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairytale. They both believe in fairytales ever since then. As for how their love bloomed, that's another story!

I admit, Online relationships do click sometimes, Sameera, but the risk involved is gr8 too.
The internet is a guilt free world. So caution is still recommended.
But once in a while, we do seem to end up finding our matches in the virtual world, don't we?
Well written, Sameera.
And congratulations on the award.
I'm sure you've been awarded bfore, but I think, that the number of times actually shows how good your blog really is.
Neway, Vinay beat me to it. He got to award you.

I have always believed that fairytales exist, and your post just reconfirmed my belief. It is sucha cute thing when you fall in love with someone whom you have never met, and neither were wanting to meet....

I will not say that I have been through the same thing, but yes, I will admit that I agree to the feeling that such a thing brings....

I wish all the best to these two people and wish that their love blossoms even more with every passing day of their lives....!!!!

And to those who say that it is fiction, I just want to say that dreams come true only in real life....and this is no fiction, right Sameera? ;)
